Good Morning!

I have never been a morning person. If you told me a few years ago that one day I’d be living on the west coast and working on an Eastern time zone schedule I would have laughed in your face! But, I suppose you gotta do what you gotta do! Doug, on the other hand, goes into work quite late so I am up early in the morning by myself while the apartment complex is still quiet. My co-workers have been really great in trying not to schedule any super early 6:00am meetings, so I try to take a few minutes every day while booting up my computer to have a little “me time” in the morning.

Coffee is my #1 necessity in the morning, especially since I still struggle to wake up super early. I get up every day and either put on my Le Creuset Kettle to make a carafe of French Press (we have a Bodum press), or if I need to prep for a meeting I’ll turn on the Keurig for a quick cup. Today I wanted to go for a walk around the marina, so I turned on the Keurig and headed out for my walk.

When I came back after 15 mins (it was chilly out!) my coffee was already ready to go and I treated myself to some whole grain waffles with strawberries. Zinnie, who usually has strawberries in the morning, didn’t seem to mind trading his breakfast with me for a piece of banana!

If I’m short I’m time I’ll just have some yogurt, but typically after a weekend (when I’ve just visited the farmer’s markets) I’ll make a green juice with some of my market goodies! One of my favorite green juice recipes is by Emily of Cupcakes and Cashmere — I just omit the parsley because I don’t like the taste. Depending on what fruit I have handy I may also throw in a few berries just to sweeten it up a bit!

I also try to spend a few minutes every morning playing with Zinnie — sometimes he will sit on my shoulder while I make breakfast, other times he’ll fly back to his cage to start eating. Some mornings he will decide he needs to take a shower while I’m rinsing his fruit in the sink, and he’ll crawl down my arm and sit under the water. Its hilarious to watch! I don’t have a video, but you can see a picture here.

When I’m finished with breakfast I head into my “office” to start my day. It’s really just a desk in our guest bedroom, but it gets decent natural light and is away from any other distractions in the apartment. My desk is an antique that I found back in Massachusetts, but its matching chair sadly broke during the move. Luckily, I was able to find an almost identical match to replace it with!

From this point in the day I’m pretty much a busy bee with work — answering emails, joining conference calls, and getting started on my ever-growing to do list. But I’m always thankful for the time I spent on myself in the morning, especially when its 4pm and I’m still sitting at my desk!

How do you spend your mornings? Do you have a must-do morning ritual? Are you an early bird or a late riser? Let me know! Send me a tweet at @tinewatson!

Relaxed California Style

We just moved into our new apartment in Marina Del Rey and I’m all set to unpack and redecorate our new place. We definitely have less space than we did before, so we will be getting creative with storage and putting a lot of our excess furniture into storage.

A lot of our decor from Newburyport will transition nicely to California, but I’m hoping to give our new place a lighter, more “West Coast” vibe. I created an Idea Board on Wayfair.com to organize my ideas and I’ve already settled on blues and greens in the bathrooms, and I’m thinking of continuing the theme into the living room. Most of our other furniture will fit, but the living room is my place to completely redecorate since we’re replacing our couches, the movers broke our floor lamp, and our dark, wine-colored Chenille pillows will be donated to Goodwill.

Even though I’m still on the ocean, I feel like California has a different kind of “nautical” feel than New England. Its no longer about anchors, lobsters, lighthouses or buoys, but its about a more laid-back and relaxed ocean vibe. I feel like the array of different blue-greens that are in the painting really pull together the other items creating a cohesive, yet still modern and fresh look. I don’t want anything too matchy-matchy or look like we tried to hard for those laid-back and relaxed vibes!

The apartment is still a scary mess of dismantled furniture and boxes, but I’ll be sure to give you a tour once we’re fully settled!

Patio Dreams

After this past winter, all I want to do is spend every waking moment outside in the sun (with SPF of course!). Doug and I are currently in the early stages of a home reno (eek!) and I although I have grand plans for some interior changes, I also want to make some much needed updates to our patio space. Our budget might not allow for some of the major changes that I really want (hello screened in porch!), but I can make some smaller changes now to help make the space feel a little more special.

My current outdoor table and chairs aren’t very comfy, so I’d love to upgrade to a nice wicker “couch” set so that I could spend my Saturdays lounging around and reading outside. The blue 4-piece outdoor set is my favorite!

Living so close to the beach is great, but there is one big downside — bugs!  Our backyard is quite buggy in the evenings and I’m highly allergic to bug bites. I think that a nice fire pit would help keep those pesky bugs away and would let me enjoy the evenings outside!

One of my favorite parts of spring and summer is watching the entire world around me grow and bloom. And when cooking, nothing is better than being able to use your own home-grown herbs and vegetables in my recipes! I don’t have a huge yard, but herbs and small vegetables grow perfectly in planters. My favorite is this raised wooden planter with a built in trellis.

How are you going to jazz up your own patio this summer? A cool new feature on Wayfair.com is their Idea Boards — you can save pieces you like together in a board, and share them with friends or keep them private! Check out my own Patio Dreams Idea Board on Wayfair here!

Living Room Upgrade with Wayfair

Our living room has made the most dramatic transformation since we purchased our house just over a year ago.  Like many of the other rooms in the house, the living room was pained a very odd color — a pea green with a grey/brown putty trim.  Here is what the room looked like right before we moved in:

Yikes! Definitely some interesting decor to overlook, but it had some great “bones” to work with — a fireplace, bay windows, and gorgeous original hardwood floors.  Our first order of business was repainting the walls to a nice creamy vanilla color that would be a great neutral backdrop.  The room is small, so it was important for me to update the space and make it feel cozy and comfortable without overwhelming it with too much “stuff”.

The finished room is brighter, cozier, and way less cluttered, even in such a small space. After we painted and moved in our furniture, the final touches were provided by Wayfair — a leather cube ottoman that I’ve converted to a side table, and the decorative pillows complete with a French postcard print.

The ottoman was a perfect compliment to our easy chair — I wanted something small that could just be used for a nice candle or glass of wine.  There’s no outlet on that side of the room, so anything taller or bigger, in my opinion, would have looked as if it needed a lamp. The pillows are pretty neutral, but they help brighten up the couches without being too colorful. They also are French themed, which you all know I love!

A great alternative to an ottoman is a floor poof — our Air BnB in Reims, FR had some on the floor and I really liked how they looked!  My in-laws also have a really large ottoman that they use as a coffee table. You can add a bit of color with a throw blanket, and a perfect addition since winter is on its way!

Now that I’ve sparked you decor ideas, head over to Wayfair.com to get 15% off any Pillow, Pouf, or Throw from November 20th through November 24th.  Use the code WFPTP15!

And, of course, I couldn’t help but throw in a picture of our favorite living room resident, Zinnie! Here he is with a beak full of raspberries, one of his favorite foods!

**A few details on our other furniture: Couches are from Jennifer Convertibles, Coffee Table was a fantastic Craigslist find in Boston, Desk is an antique from my husband’s grandfather, and our easy chair and ottoman is from Overstock.

Bedroom Upgrade with Wayfair

Doug and I have lived in three different houses and never had a proper headboard for our bed. I have been meaning to get one, but with so many other things going on we just never got around to it. However, night after night my pillows would fall behind my mattress, and the bed never looked “finished” when I made it in the morning. Here is the sad before shot of our bedroom:

Thankfully, Wayfair and their Daily Sales came to my rescue! Announced each day at noon, they have several different deals that will run for a short period of time on different types of items — home furnishings, rugs, patio accessories, you name it!  And I was in luck that this week there was a Daily Sale for bedroom furniture!

There were three headboards I liked and, of course, I sent links off to Doug for his opinion. We considered the Fenton Headboard, the Sanford Headboard and the Dexter Headboard.  In the end we decided the Fenton Headboard would be the best fit for our room — both in style and in height since we have a low sloping ceiling to worry about!

I am so thrilled with how our new headboard looks! And I was shocked at how easily and fast we put it together — 3 pieces and a few screws was all it took to connect it to our bed frame. The headboard really gives our bedroom that final touch we were missing. Now if only I could magically make the ceiling paint turn white I’d be all set!  And for those of you who were following my house transformation and painting adventures, the room color actually looked like this before we moved in:
