I have never been a morning person. If you told me a few years ago that one day I’d be living on the west coast and working on an Eastern time zone schedule I would have laughed in your face! But, I suppose you gotta do what you gotta do! Doug, on the other hand, goes into work quite late so I am up early in the morning by myself while the apartment complex is still quiet. My co-workers have been really great in trying not to schedule any super early 6:00am meetings, so I try to take a few minutes every day while booting up my computer to have a little “me time” in the morning.

Coffee is my #1 necessity in the morning, especially since I still struggle to wake up super early. I get up every day and either put on my Le Creuset Kettle to make a carafe of French Press (we have a Bodum press), or if I need to prep for a meeting I’ll turn on the Keurig for a quick cup. Today I wanted to go for a walk around the marina, so I turned on the Keurig and headed out for my walk.

When I came back after 15 mins (it was chilly out!) my coffee was already ready to go and I treated myself to some whole grain waffles with strawberries. Zinnie, who usually has strawberries in the morning, didn’t seem to mind trading his breakfast with me for a piece of banana!

If I’m short I’m time I’ll just have some yogurt, but typically after a weekend (when I’ve just visited the farmer’s markets) I’ll make a green juice with some of my market goodies! One of my favorite green juice recipes is by Emily of Cupcakes and Cashmere — I just omit the parsley because I don’t like the taste. Depending on what fruit I have handy I may also throw in a few berries just to sweeten it up a bit!

I also try to spend a few minutes every morning playing with Zinnie — sometimes he will sit on my shoulder while I make breakfast, other times he’ll fly back to his cage to start eating. Some mornings he will decide he needs to take a shower while I’m rinsing his fruit in the sink, and he’ll crawl down my arm and sit under the water. Its hilarious to watch! When I’m finished with breakfast I head into my “office” to start my day. It’s really just a desk in our guest bedroom, but it gets decent natural light and is away from any other distractions in the apartment. My desk is an antique that I found back in Massachusetts, but its matching chair sadly broke during the move. Luckily, I was able to find an almost identical match to replace it with!

From this point in the day I’m pretty much a busy bee with work — answering emails, joining conference calls, and getting started on my ever-growing to do list. But I’m always thankful for the time I spent on myself in the morning, especially when its 4pm and I’m still sitting at my desk!

Blush & Rose

My favorite color has always been pink, but theres something about springtime that really makes me drawn to the pastel blush and rose colors. Even when I’m grocery shopping, I can’t help but pick up a pretty pink bouquet of ranunculus or tulips, and maybe a bottle of rosé wine! And just this weekend I just swapped out my red nail polish for a pretty pastel pink hue. Here are some of my other pink favorites:

Weekend Plans

My weekends since moving to California have become so much more active. We’re either going to brunch with friends, biking along the coast, or shopping at the local farmer’s market. My style has also adapted to the low-key and laid-back lifestyle here — everyone is in t-shirts and jeans!  Here’s a look at this past weekend…

Saturday we hit up the Farmer’s Market — I love buying fresh flowers (the selection is amazing) and fruits/vegetables for the week. Every weekend I try to pick a new market to visit and so far we’ve been to the markets in Mar Vista, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, and Playa Vista.

For an easy look for heading to the market, I wore my Banana Republic Boyfriend Chino Crops with an old jean jacket and some leather sandals. Its gorgeous and sunny here almost every single day, but still sometimes in the low 60s in the morning, so the cropped length was perfect.

Sundays in California were totally meant for brunch with huevos rancheros (or breakfast burritos!), mimosas, and great friends. After brunch we took a walk down the pier at Hermosa Beach to watch the surfers and then biked to Venice Beach for a post-brunch nap.

I wore my Banana Republic Button-Front Denim Skirt with a casual linen shirt and my go-to leather sandals. It was a bit breezy, but it was a beautiful day to walk along the water.

What’s in my gym bag…

One of the first things I did when we moved to Los Angeles was join a gym. I toured a few locations and settled on one that had two locations near our apartment and a good schedule of group fitness classes. I’m lucky that I work from home and don’t have to rush to/from an office after my classes, but I still have my gym bag packed and ready to go so I can hop over after I’m done for the day and get in my spin class or strength session. Here’s what I’ve been keeping in my bag:

I’ve been using my quilted MZ Wallace Metro Tote as my gym bag. I like that it doesn’t scream “athletic” with any sports logos, but rather its got a sleek black textured design. Its roomy and fits all of my stuff! I don’t wear any makeup to the gym (except for a little swipe of tinted lip balm!), but because I’m acne prone I’ll always wipe my face and neck down with a Simple Cleansing Wipe after class.

Keeping my hair off my face and neck is really important during an intense class. I’m a huge fan of both Lululemon and Zella headbands, and since my hair is fine, I use a wide, damage-free hair tie.

I track all of my workouts with my Apple Watch Sport. I have a Jawbone UP that I wear during the day and at night for sleeping, but it doesn’t track heart rate or “stationary” workouts like spinning, so the Apple Watch has been awesome for those workouts as well as my weekend bike rides along the beach. And speaking of spinning, I have a pair of Giro cycling shoes for class.

For barre/yoga classes my gym provides the mats, but I’m not sure how often they are cleaned so I’ll bring along a mat towel to place on top. After every use I can just toss it into the washing machine and have a clean towel to bring to every time!

For every trip to the gym (and pretty much anytime I leave the house) I always have my S’well bottle with me — keeps my drinks super cold with slippery no condensation on the bottle.

I typically take group fitness classes, but on the off-chance I miss the class (traffic!) I’ll have a pair  of earbuds handy so I can get in a quick treadmill or elliptical session and still be able to listen to some music. And last but not least, I always keep some sort of healthy snack in my bag, like a Kind Bar, just incase I need some fuel before a workout!

Mini French Toast

It seems that every time I buy a baguette I can never seem to finish it before it becomes stale–fresh bread really only has a 1 or 2 day window–so most of the time I end up with no choice but having to throw out the rest of the baguette! Not able to find a baker nearby who makes a half-sized baguette, I came up with an idea the other morning to use up the rest of my still-fresh bread… Mini french toast!

What you’ll need:
Leftover baguette
1-2 eggs
Cinnamon
Splash of milk
Maple syrup
Berries for garnish (optional, but highly recommended!)

Slice up your bread into 1-2 centimeter slices. Whisk together 1-2 eggs, splash of milk, and teaspoon or so of cinnamon. Soak each piece of bread in the egg/milk/cinnamon mixture. Heat a cast iron griddle pan (we have this one) on medium-high heat, lightly grease, and cook each side of the bread until golden brown. Serve immediately with maple syrup and berries!
