The Good Ones

The_Good_Ones 1

Have you heard of The Good Ones?  They describe themselves as a “dynamic collection of interesting people with common passions.” Recently I had the opportunity to attend a Good Ones event with my girl Noelle and I didn’t really know what to expect. The event took place at Grille 23 & Bar, a swanky bar and steakhouse restaurant in the Back Bay. We people watched for a bit and then started to build the confidence to mingle with the crowd — all outfitted in the “moody blues” dress code.

We finally started to mingle around and met a few really awesome people. Several seasoned Good Ones told us they felt the same at their first event and assured us — you really can just go up to people, introduce yourself, and start chatting!

BOSatoga – Part 2

Half the fun of visiting Saratoga was planning out what to wear! We were by far the fanciest visitors to the track and we attracted a lot of attention by the other racegoers who wanted to take pictures of our hats and fascinators.

I wanted to wear something fun and I ended up choosing a bright pink full midi skirt from Express, a cream tank from Bobbles and Lace, heels and purse from Zara, sunglasses from Prada, and a hat from TJMaxx (with DIY’ed pink feathers). I’ve actually worn my hat on a few different occasions.

Aside from the fashion, one of my favorite parts of the day was getting to meet some of the jockeys. After every race you can stand outside and watch as they walk past you out of the building. They are all covered with dirt and mud from the race and wear several pairs of goggles around their helmet and neck. I was also able to catch some pictures of them just as they left the track.

Of course what was really exciting was when one of our hosts, Victoria, brought Lianna (of Salem Style Crochet) and I back into the paddocks to meet one of the jockeys!  Of course you can tell by the lack of dust and dirt he was on his way in for a race!

And just to top off the day, we were in the paddocks with Miss Connecticut 2014, Acacia Courtney!  Lianna and I both grew up in Connecticut, so we were really excited to get the chance to meet her.  We will definitely be rooting for her in the Miss America 2015 pageant this fall!

Thanks again to Centennial Farms, Fasig-Tipton, and America’s Best Racing (especially Dan and Victoria!) for hosting us in Saratoga! I hope we can make BOSatoga happen again!

BOSatoga – A blogger trip to Saratoga

Last Saturday I took day trip with 16 of my fellow Boston bloggers for an afternoon of horse racing! Organized by America’s Best Racing and Centennial Farms, we were whisked from Boston on a private bus over to Saratoga with Fox Sports 1 in tow! On the 3 hour trip we were all interviewed about our different blogs, what we were wearing, and what we were most excited about doing in Saratoga. Of course, we nibbled on some snacks and indulged in some wine provided to us by Richer Pour, a Boston based company that specializes in wine on tap.

When we arrived we went straight to the Fasig-Tipton Auction House, where we were greeted with a private lunch and mimosa & bloody mary bar. During lunch we were fortunate enough to meet with Don Little, Jr. of Centennial Farms as well as Jimmy Jerkens, trainer for Wicked Strong, the 4th place finishing horse in the 2014 Kentucky Derby. We all have a soft spot for Wicked Strong, as a percentage of his race winnings get donated to Boston’s One Fund.

We mingled on the balcony for a bit (taking outfit pictures, of course!) before learning about how to bet on horses with Tom Amello from Trackfacts. Pictured above is Amy from Cupcakes n Couture, Katherine from Style Tab, and Heather from Glamorous Baggage.  Aren’t their fascinators amazing?

After lunch we headed over to the Saratoga Race Course where we were granted VIP paddock access to see some of the horses up close!  Here I’m meeting Black Jack, one of the escort ponies at the track.

We didn’t get to see any of the racehorses up close (they needed to relax before their race!) but we got to watch them being lead out of the paddocks to the track by their handlers and owners.

Once out of the paddocks and onto the tracks they get paired up with their escort ponies. I learned that the escort ponies help keep the racehorses calm and under control while amidst all of the noise and commotion that is happening in the stands nearby.

For one of the races I was able to get right up to the fence and snapped some pictures as the horses crossed the finish line. The man next to me helped explain the length of the track. It’s measured in “furlongs” which equal 1/8 of a mile.

Stay tuned for more BOSatoga tomorrow!

Boston Loves the H&M Home Collection

HM_Home 1

Last week I attended the Grand Re-Opening of H&M Boston on Newbury Street and got to have the first look at their new H&M Home Collection!  The Home Collection did not disappoint — it definitely had a European flair with so many different types of items from duvet covers, shower curtains, pillows, throw blankets, and even glassware.
