A color story

Banana_Republic 1

A few years ago my wardrobe was mostly color — hot pink sweaters, green scarves, red pants, bright blue heels, you name a color and I had it! Perhaps its been a slow change since I started working from home four years ago and started to purge my closet of all my “work” clothes, but I really hadn’t realized that my wardrobe as of late consists of mostly basic neutrals — black, navy, tan and white.  I didn’t notice this shift to basics until Banana Republic sent me a few items to style that were way out of my current comfort color zone! However, my previous love of color kicked right in when I got to work styling the items.

They first piece was a bright lime green fitted blouse that I immediately saw as a great pop of color to a pair of white skinnies or white jean shorts. The shirt is very bright and definitely needed a neutral to anchor it! Or, playing with the delicate floral pattern, I could also see this look taking on a 70s spin with the addition of some flares!

And the second item was a pair of blue paisley trousers that have a pretty modest and “buisness-y” cut, but are obviously very whimsy in print. With the addition of a sleek black tank and fancy earrings I opted towards a look I could wear out on date night. But with a black or white blouse and plain pumps I could definitely wear these pants on the rare days I head into the office.

the dress: part 2

Like I mentioned last week, I really saw this dress as a super versatile piece that could be worn multiple ways all summer. I definitely see it coming with me on my trip back to the east coast next month — I only have a small amount of room in my suitcase (I rarely check my bag) and I’ll be there for 10+ days, so I’ll need to maximize my space with items that can be mixed and matched!  I’ll definitely be dressing it up at night for dinners, and down during the day for shopping and trips to the Beach Plum for lobster rolls!

Here I’ve opened up the dress and removed the belt to make it into a long flowy vest to wear over white jeans. I think it would look equally great with darker skinny denim, and maybe even some flares. I’m now debating trying out this look with a pair of jean shorts… I’ll let you know!

The past few years I’ve really been focused on purchasing items that are less trendy or “fast fashion” and more timeless and classic. I spotted this Who What Wear x Target dress the other day and was so distracted with trying to frantically find it in my size that I completely forgot about the vitamins that I actually went in there for! (I like Olly if you’re wondering!)

I love the shirtdress style with the optional belted waist — totally classic, but able to be dressed up or down with the addition of jewelry, heels, sandals, or even jeans! Its also super lightweight and will be perfect for dinner or drinks on hot summer nights.  I will note that its not as opaque as I’d like it to be, so I wore a slip underneath!

Check back next week for Part 2 where I’ll style the dress in a totally different way. This dress will definitely be in heavy rotation in my wardrobe this summer!

Yoga with Mandy Ingber

When I moved to California, one of the things I missed most was the blogger community I had back in Boston. I had a great network of friends along with the Boston Bloggers and Blog Better Boston organizations that planned awesome events. So one of the first things I started to look for when I finally felt settled was another blogging community out here.

I found Blogger Babes through Meetup.com, and many of the seats at their events go super quick, so I was thrilled when I got a spot at the Mandy Ingber yoga event at RonRobinson in Santa Monica!

Mandy Ingber is a celebrity fitness and wellness expert here in Los Angeles with some of her clients being Jennifer Aniston and Chelsea Handler!  The yoga class at RonRobinson was to celebrate the launch of her latest book, Yogalosophy For Inner Strength: 12 Weeks to Heal Your Heart and Embrace Joy.

RonRobinson sells a unique array of clothing, home goods, and beauty products, including my favorite Diptyque candles and Oribe hair products. They have such a unique space and I discovered that they host free yoga classes every weekend! If you’re ever in Santa Monica, its definitely a must visit!

Good Morning!

GoodMorningWayfair4

I have never been a morning person. If you told me a few years ago that one day I’d be living on the west coast and working on an Eastern time zone schedule I would have laughed in your face! But, I suppose you gotta do what you gotta do! Doug, on the other hand, goes into work quite late so I am up early in the morning by myself while the apartment complex is still quiet. My co-workers have been really great in trying not to schedule any super early 6:00am meetings, so I try to take a few minutes every day while booting up my computer to have a little “me time” in the morning.

Coffee is my #1 necessity in the morning, especially since I still struggle to wake up super early. I get up every day and either put on my Le Creuset Kettle to make a carafe of French Press (we have a Bodum press), or if I need to prep for a meeting I’ll turn on the Keurig for a quick cup. Today I wanted to go for a walk around the marina, so I turned on the Keurig and headed out for my walk.

When I came back after 15 mins (it was chilly out!) my coffee was already ready to go and I treated myself to some whole grain waffles with strawberries. Zinnie, who usually has strawberries in the morning, didn’t seem to mind trading his breakfast with me for a piece of banana!

If I’m short I’m time I’ll just have some yogurt, but typically after a weekend (when I’ve just visited the farmer’s markets) I’ll make a green juice with some of my market goodies! One of my favorite green juice recipes is by Emily of Cupcakes and Cashmere — I just omit the parsley because I don’t like the taste. Depending on what fruit I have handy I may also throw in a few berries just to sweeten it up a bit!

I also try to spend a few minutes every morning playing with Zinnie — sometimes he will sit on my shoulder while I make breakfast, other times he’ll fly back to his cage to start eating. Some mornings he will decide he needs to take a shower while I’m rinsing his fruit in the sink, and he’ll crawl down my arm and sit under the water. Its hilarious to watch! I don’t have a video, but you can see a picture here.

When I’m finished with breakfast I head into my “office” to start my day. It’s really just a desk in our guest bedroom, but it gets decent natural light and is away from any other distractions in the apartment. My desk is an antique that I found back in Massachusetts, but its matching chair sadly broke during the move. Luckily, I was able to find an almost identical match to replace it with!

From this point in the day I’m pretty much a busy bee with work — answering emails, joining conference calls, and getting started on my ever-growing to do list. But I’m always thankful for the time I spent on myself in the morning, especially when its 4pm and I’m still sitting at my desk!

How do you spend your mornings? Do you have a must-do morning ritual? Are you an early bird or a late riser? Let me know! Send me a tweet at @tinewatson!
