Beauty Obsession Thursday: Facial Mist

My latest beauty obsession is with facial mists and sprays. They are refreshing and have so many uses — hydrating your skin, setting or refreshing your makeup, reducing redness, and more. I’ve been making the rounds trying several different kinds and I bring a new one every time I have to take a long plane ride back east, which seems to be every other week! Here are some of my favorites that I’ve tried, and a few others that are on my list!

Herbivore Botanicals is a brand that I’ve had on my radar for awhile now, and I just recently spotted them in the window of Urban Outfitters in downtown Santa Monica. I love anything rose scented, so I can’t wait to try their Rose Hibiscus Facial Mist. I’ve also been eying their Sea Mist Hair & Body Spray.

A tried and true staple, Evian’s Brumisateur Facial Spray comes in 3 different sizes from TSA friendly to a huge 10oz bottle. I keep the largest size in my refrigerator and pack it with me when I go to the beach. Cools you off without having to go in the ocean! I’m a wimp and never want to go into the chilly water!

Another facial mist I am dying to try is by Vitamin Hydrating Mist by First Aid Beauty. This one is packed with vitamins and antioxidants, which sounds like exactly what our skin needs on a long haul flight. I’ll definitely be picking this one up before my next trip.

Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir is one of the first facial mists I tried (of course, its French!) and it  has a bit of an astringent in it. Its also packed with tons of essential oils and has a soothing herbal scent to it.

I love Kiehl’s for their lip balm and Creamy Avocado Eye Cream, but I stumbled upon their In-Flight Refreshing Face Mist while at the Orlando Airport. I had 5+ hours ahead of me in the air and thought I’d give it a try. The essential oils in the mist also have natural anti-bacterial properties, which is perfect for that icky recycled air.

Before it became more widely available, I used to stock up on Avène products, including their Thermal Spring Water, every time I went to NYC. I’d spend 45 minutes at Duane Reade scoping out all of the European skincare products! I have a large bottle of Avene on my bathroom vanity and use it to set my makeup before I leave the house.

My newest facial spray is by Mario Badescu. I’ve loved their drying lotions and creams for acne, and picked up this while I was waiting in line at Ulta. This one has soothing aloe and rosewater in it and as a bonus its one of the most affordable sprays!

The third spray that’s on my list to try is by philosophy. The Renewed Hope in a Jar Hydrating Mist contains philosphy’s exclusive skin renewal technology and AHAs that helps your skin to glow from the inside out!

I’ve used La Roche-Posay’s sunscreen for years, and picked up their Thermal Spring Water when I was on my way home for the weekend and forgot my spray at home. Its very similar to Avène and Evian sprays — just plain pure water!

Summer Beauty Favorites

Summer is definitely the time of year when I pare down my beauty routine. With no AC in my house and the Boston weather being a mix of hot and humid, I do what I can to ensure that I’m looking my best without my makeup melting off my face. Here are some of my favorite summer beauty products as of late:

Beach Blonde Sea Waves Salt Spray: Its back! John Freida’s legendary Beach Blonde products are back and better than ever!  My hair doesn’t get beach waves, but this product gives my thin hair great volume.  I spray it on my roots when my hair is damp, leave it to dry for a little bit, and then blow dry it for a few minutes.

Coola Makeup Setting Spray & SPF 30: This stuff is great and I don’t know how I survived so many summers without it! A 70% organic formula (yeah!) that helps set makeup with a matte finish while also providing SPF 30 protection.

Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne: I love this scent more than anything I have ever tried before, and it made more special by the fact that I tried it for the first time while I was shopping in Paris.

Sun Bum Sunscreen SPF 50: Hopefully a no-brainer, but sunscreen is a must! On the weekends when I am home I love to go biking and kayaking, or sometimes just a lazy day at the beach. Of course, I never go out in the sun without sunscreen, and Sun Bum is my favorite because it smells like the Caribbean!

Marcelle BB Cream: I try to keep the makeup on my face to a minimum, so this BB Cream is the perfect answer.  It has a bit of a gold sheen and brightens my face without being too heavy.

Tarte Lip Tint: No heavy lipsticks for me in the summer. Tarte’s Lip Tint is light but gives a nice dose of color that won’t melt off. And I always have the option of putting a gloss over it if its not too hot out!

Evian Facial Spray

Evian_Spray

I’ll admit it — I’ve used Evian’s facial spray for years without truly knowing all of its many beauty uses! In the past I’ve kept a bottle in the refrigerator to use when I headed to the beach or pool in the summer. New England beaches are gorgeous, but have icy cold water! So a few quick sprays is all I need to cool off without having to jump into the chilly ocean. Everyone in my family knows that I do not go swimming in cold water!

Summer is coming up and I will definitely be keeping the spray on hand for my trips to the beach, but I’ve since added a bottle to my makeup routine! I’ve recored some of my new favorite uses in a video:

Heres a recap of some of my favorite uses for Evian’s Facial Spray:

– A quick mist of the spray helps to set my foundation after I’ve applied it.

-Their smallest bottle is a convenient 1.7oz (TSA friendly!) and the perfect antidote to dry airplane skin. I’ve already ordered one to have on hand for my next trip.

-When my skin is feeling a little blah, I spray a little on a little during the day to wake myself up. Definitely an office desk staple for looking fresh and fab before some post work-drinks!

-For some extra hydration I’ll use the spray after washing my face. I’ll wait a few minutes to let it sink in, and then apply my moisturizer.

Thanks to Evian & Brandbacker for sponsoring this post. All opinions are my own and I have been using Evian’s Facial Spray at the beach for years!

Prepping for summer with Beauty Protector

Beauty_Protector (1)

Spring is finally here, which means summer is just around the corner! Summertime is when my hair really takes a beating — sun, sand, salt water, chlorine — it all leads to severe damage. But I’m not letting it happen this year! I’m thinking ahead and using Beauty Protector to keep my fine hair as healthy as possible.

BeautyProtector1

Beauty Protector, sold exclusively on Birchbox.com, has a shampoo, conditioner, treatment mask, oil, dry shampoo, and my absolute favorite, the detangler. I use the detangler every time I shower, and sometimes if my hair is feeling particularly dry I’ll use the oil instead. The products are so hydrating and nourishing — and since my hair is so thin I only need to use a little bit.

Doug has been out of town on business, so its been the perfect time to have a little spa night for myself with the Treatment Mask. Its not everyday that I can sit on couch and watch girly TV marathons with conditioner in my hair!

How to wear red lipstick

Red_Lipstick

I think that I finally have become comfortable with how to wear red lipstick. It might sound petty, but it took awhile for me to really feel good about wearing red lipstick. I remember the first time I tried red lipstick — I purchased a tube of MAC Lady Bug during my lunch hour and put it on in the bathroom. A few of my co-workers definitely noticed and I felt very self-conscious. But I kept trying it out and eventually found my red lip groove. So, for those of you who may want to venture into the world of bright & bold, here are a few tips and tricks:

Start small. Don’t try out a red lip on the day of a big event.  Try it out by wearing it around your house one day, or to dinner with a close friend. You’ll immediately feel odd when you see yourself, but you’ll get used to it eventually.

Figure out your color. Some ladies look better in blue based red lipsticks. Others with a pink or coral based lipstick. If you don’t know what looks best on you, have someone from a makeup counter at Nordstrom or Sephora do a color match for your skin.

Don’t underestimate lip liner. No, not the nude lip with brown liner à la 1980. A matching or clear liner can be a godsend for keeping your lip color on your lips. I have too many different colors of red lipstick, so I always keep Lipstick Queen’s Invisible Liner on hand.

A few of my favorite reds:

Nars Dragon Girl Super Bright red
Nars Red Square Orangey Red
Nars Shanghai Express Brick Red
MAC Russian Red Blue-Red
MAC Lady Bug Sheer Yellowy Red
Hourglass Icon Burgundy Red
YSL Rouge Pur Couture #9 Bright Red
